Walk & Learn: Nature (Frick Park, lower portion)

Pittsburgh Park Ranger Erica Heide & Dick Wilford will lead this 1.5-2 mile walk around Frick Park.  This hike will be a slow pace walk with 3-5 stops to discuss the history of Frick Park and the Nine Mile Run Stream restoration.  Participants should be prepared for different terrain types which can be slippery including, compacted gravel, boardwalks, brick pathways and pavement.
Frick Park is Pittsburgh’s largest park.  Over the past 97 years the park’s undergone multiple changes notably the largest being the Nine Mile Run Stream restoration in 2005.  This remarkable change has increase the park’s biodiversity and restored the health of the stream.  During this hike we will take a walk (literally!) down memory lane and discuss the transformation.
Senior Park Ranger Erica Heide has been with the Park Ranger Program since 2017.  Her love of conservation and background in Environmental Science made her the first ranger in Frick Park.  Her establishment and success in Frick Park is most notably due to her mentor, Retired City of Pittsburgh Park Maintenance Manager, Dick Wilford.
Dick Wilford, now retired, was responsible for the care and oversight of Frick Park and other East End parks for over 20 years.  With over 25 years of city experience, Dick was instrumental in creating the Frick Park we know and love today.  His oversight and history with the park is unmatched and although retired, dedication to Frick Park is unwavering.
