1. Briefly tell us about your background: where did you grow up, where did you go to school, or what brought you to Venture Outdoors? 

My name is Dan Gonzalez. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and studied at Allegheny College. I came to Venture Outdoors because I am passionate about getting people outside! There are many benefits to a connection with the outdoors, and I want to make it accessible to everyone.

2. Describe your role at Venture Outdoors in 10 words or less. 

I am the Camp Coordinator at Venture Outdoors. I primarily manage our summer camps.

3. If you had to pick only one recreational activity to practice for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? 

I would choose fungal identification. There are so many unique fungi that go overlooked. Google cortinarius iodes and mycena haematopus.

4. What are your top five favorite outdoors/travel destinations?  

Forbes State Forest, McConnells Mill, Erie National Wildlife Refuge, Allegheny National Forest, and Presque Isle

5. What is your favorite forest/camping snack? 

I’d have to say Cheez-it’s.

6. Name three people in history (dead or alive) with whom you would want to take on a Venture Outdoors program of your choice. 

Gary Lincoff, Paul Stamets, and John James Audubon

7. What is the earliest memory you have of being outside? 

I always went to outdoor education programs as a kid. They sparked my love of the outdoors. I particularly loved anything relating to stream ecology.

8. Any hidden talents? 

I can unicycle.

9. What is your favorite song (or album) right now? 

Summer Samba (So Nice) by Walter Wanderley.

10. What is your biggest challenge nowadays?

My biggest challenge is waiting to go outside until I finish my work.
