Beginner Kayak Class

Interested in learning how to kayak? Join us at the North Park boathouse for an introduction to kayaking. We will introduce basic equipment, learn to paddle and steer a kayak, and finally take the boats out for some practice. No experience required! 

Trip Leaders: Our trained Kayak Pittsburgh Excursionists will go over how to use common kayaking gear on land and then will guide the group on the water while offering suggestions to improve paddling techniques. 

Activity level: Beginner – This is a slow paced, introductory paddle designed for kayakers with little to no experience. North Park Lake is a flatwater lake with no current and motorized watercraft are prohibited. It is a great environment for new paddlers!

What to Bring: While kayaking is not necessarily a “get wet” sport, you might get dripped on or splashed occasionally. It is best to wear clothes that dry quickly. Wear comfortable shoes that could potentially get wet.  

Distance: Our distance traveled on the lake will depend on the pace the group needs, but you can plan to spend roughly one hour on the lake. 

Starting Location: We will meet and launch from Kayak Pittsburgh North Park located at the North Park Boathouse. Parking can be found in the boathouse parking lot or along Tennis Court Road. The google maps link is below: https://maps.app.goo.gl/AtzD2fzGJnC4oRi16

Additional Information:

Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time to ensure that the trip gets underway on time. Dress for the weather (Venture Outdoors trips proceed rain or shine!), bring water and wear comfortable closed toe shoes. By purchasing a ticket, you acknowledge that you are physically able to undertake the activity described above.
