Exploration of Observatory Hill Hollows Greenway

The Greenways for Pittsburgh initiative was established back in 1980 with the primary goal of designating and safeguarding steep, unbuildable terrains. This endeavor aimed to protect the natural beauty of hillsides and preserve passive open spaces. Over time, this program has successfully led to the identification of twelve distinct greenways, encompassing a total of 605 acres. Remarkably, these areas constitute approximately 14% of the entirety of Pittsburgh’s public open space.

We invite you to join Venture Outdoors on a leisurely stroll through one such greenway, spanning 18 acres and nestled within the heart of Observatory Hill, alternately referred to as Perry North. This locale draws its name from the renowned Allegheny Observatory—a historic landmark perched atop Riverview Park. It’s worth noting that Observatory Hill was once contiguous with the neighboring Summer Hill; however, the construction of I-279 during the 1980s severed this connection, thereby reshaping the flow of people between these neighborhoods. Standing tall at an impressive elevation of 1370 feet, Observatory Hill boasts the loftiest peak among all of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods.

Distance: 2.5 miles. There will be hills, but we will take them slowly.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time to ensure that the trip gets underway on time. Dress for the weather (Venture Outdoors trips proceed rain or shine!), bring water and wear comfortable closed toe shoes.
