Flatwater Rescue Course

Ever wonder what to do if your kayak flips over? Wonder no more! Come learn rescue techniques from experienced Kayak Pittsburgh Excursionists certified by the American Canoe Association. This course will will have both out-of-water and in-water components, covering the following: personal preparation for kayaking, key swimming skills, self rescues, assisted rescues and tows, and important rescue equipment.

Trip Leaders: Kayak Pittsburgh Excursionists leading this course are certified by the American Canoe Association to instruct flatwater kayaking techniques in line with (at least) the ACA’s Level 1 curriculum. 

Activity level: Intermediate – participants in this course should have previously kayaking experience. While it does not need to be extensive, this course does not contain beginner-level instruction. 

What to Bring: This course will involve exiting your kayak into the lake multiple times. We recommend wearing non-cotton clothing that dries quickly. 

Distance: This is a skill building course rather than a distance-covering paddle. Our time on the lake will generally be spent in the same spot as we practice rescues and other techniques. 

Starting Location: We will meet and launch from Kayak Pittsburgh North Park located at the North Park Boathouse. Parking can be found in the boathouse parking lot or along Tennis Court Road. The google maps link is below: https://maps.app.goo.gl/AtzD2fzGJnC4oRi16

Ticket Sales Close: Ticket sales will close 48 hours before the scheduled event time.

Dress for the weather (Venture Outdoors trips proceed rain or shine!), bring water and wear comfortable closed toe shoes.
