Millvale Art Tour

Join Venture Outdoors and the Society to Preserve the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka on a tour to explore the rich history and bright future that highlights the artwork throughout the Borough of Millvale.

We’ll start with a guided tour of the Vanka Murals and then proceed to a 60 minute walking tour in search of the interesting and unique public art throughout the Borough. We will primarily walk on sidewalks but may encounter some traffic through intersections at a brisk pace with minimum to low-grade hills.

Discover this unique site at the intersection of history, art, and social justice on a guided tour at the historic St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale. Described by David Byrne of The Talking Heads as “the Diego Rivera of Pittsburgh,” Croatian immigrant Maxo Vanka painted these striking murals in 1937 and 1941 in protest against industrial capitalism, war, and the rise of fascism. Gain a better understanding of Pittsburgh and its people and see why this monumental work remains relevant to this day.
