I always wanted to try fly-fishing, but I didn’t know how to get started

Kim Refosco has always been outdoorsy. Hiking, biking, fishing, caving, you name it – she wanted to try it.

While she grew learned to fish from her dad, she wanted to try fly fishing, but didn’t know how to get started. She joined the Venture Outdoors public program for Beginner Fly Fishing and had a blast! However, she didn’t see a lot of people that looked like her.

That’s when she signed up to start the Pittsburgh chapter of Outdoor Afro. She has now been leading Black people outdoors for the past 5 years!

Kim didn’t stop there. Now she is ready to taking her experience full circle, and has developed a partnership between Outdoor Afro and Venture Outdoors – AND has joined the Venture Outdoors Board of Directors.

It’s not always about the big adventures for Kim, she wants folx to know that getting outdoors can mean walking outside the front door, sitting in your garden, and relaxing. Whatever you choose to do, know that getting outdoors can be healing.
