Age 50+ Public Transit Series: Riverview Park
This moderate hike takes place in Riverview Park — one of the City of Pittsburgh’s Big Four (Schenley, Frick, Highland and Riverview), and the only one on the North Side. The park features the Allegheny Observatory, which is near the start/end of this loop and can be viewed from the outside, as well as several treasures along the trail such as the ruins of the Watson Cabin and (if time permits) the Pictures of the future art installation.
This hike will meander along wooded trails where there are many types of birds as well as deer and other wildlife. There are sections of the trails which are narrow and steep, or require navigating fallen logs or small rock ledges. Hiking poles are recommended but not required for most folks. Although it is in the City, we will generally be away from traffic. In late July, it will likely be hot and dry, so bring plenty of water. There may even be blackberries!
This series of hikes was designed for folks age 50+ who are currently active and can comfortably walk 3 miles over varied terrain. This hike is designed for folks who can comfortably walk 3 miles without stopping. Please make sure that you are signing up for an appropriate level of difficulty. If you are a beginner or need to build up your stamina, we recommend the Age 50+ Walk & Learn Series.
